Compensation & Project Expectations
Understanding how projects communicate financial expectations on At Step One.
Important: At Step One provides general educational information and links to outside resources. This information is not legal, tax, financial, or business advice. Laws and contractual requirements vary by location and circumstance. Consider consulting a qualified professional when creating formal agreements.
At Step One separates monetary compensation from optional collaboration benefits so creators can make informed decisions before joining a project.
Compensation options
- Paid — The collaborator is expected to receive direct monetary compensation. Specific rates, payment schedules, milestones, or other terms should be agreed upon between the people involved.
- Revenue Share — The collaborator may receive an agreed portion of future project revenue. Revenue share is not automatically the same thing as company ownership or equity.
- Unpaid / Volunteer — No direct monetary compensation is currently being offered. These collaborations may instead be motivated by portfolio development, experience, professional credit, community involvement, networking, or interest in the project.
- To Be Determined — Compensation has not yet been finalized. Project owners should update this status when terms become clearer.
Projects can evolve
A project may begin as To Be Determined or Unpaid / Volunteer and later receive funding, sponsorship, crowdfunding, grants, sales revenue, or another source of financial support.
Project owners can update compensation information as circumstances change. Significant changes should be communicated clearly to existing team members.
Additional benefits are separate from compensation
Optional benefits such as Portfolio Building, Professional Credit, Experience, Networking, Mentorship, and Potential Long-Term Opportunity are not substitutes for monetary compensation and should remain displayed separately from the project's compensation status.
